The retrofitting project for the primary school located in Via Bardonecchia 36 - Torino focuses on enhancing building sustainability, both in energy usage and materials, while improving the quality of space for students. Analysis reveals issues with thermal regulation due to lack of insulation, inefficient ventilation, and excessive solar radiation through poorly managed openings. To address them, strategies include insulation layers, mesh screens for solar control, and passive cooling through vegetation. Active systems like ventilation and water control are also implemented alongside a significant solar power system of 60kWp generating 70,000kWh/y of electric energy.
Ventilation improvements include extending and perforating the inner atrium to enhance airflow and introduce a wind tower for air conditioning. Architectural changes aim at enhancing user experience, such as creating open pathways between courtyards and redesigning spaces for adaptable functions. Staircases are opened up, and educational spaces are reconfigured to foster dynamic learning environments. Classrooms are optimized for light, heat gain, and ventilation, with distinctive windows for visual interest and flexible furniture configurations.
Externally, the mesh screens and architectural changes break the monotony of the building's form, creating playful aspects and integrating greenery to filter air and enhance aesthetics. The design aims to transform the school into a complex with multiple functions that engage the local community, shifting from a linear entry experience of students to one of exploration and shared use by other guests as well. These include, a gymnasium, a playground, and an open adaptable ground floor that can host various exhibitions and ceremonies.
